The Kitchen Renovation Timeline

Allow your kitchen remodel 12 weeks. We always hope we can get a kitchen done in 8-10 weeks, but as we mentioned in Part 1, unknown complications can and do happen.

When possible, we recommend our clients do one of the following three things to help them survive their kitchen remodel:

  1. Move out temporarily when possible

  2. Set up a makeshift kitchen in another room away from the dust & work

  3. Live through it. We will try to keep your sink and appliances in for as long as possible, however, you may go a day or two without a sink during counter install. This scenario usually adds a lot of stress to a family and can sometimes make the kitchen renovation process longer.

  1. Demo day. Kitchen renovation demo day is the day that you say goodbye to your cabinets, counters and any walls that are moving. Usually, any of those unwanted surprises reveal themselves during demo.

  2. Electrical & new plumbing

  3. Drywall.

  4. Cabinets installation

  5. Counters installation

  6. Backsplash installation

  7. Floor refinishing

  8. Painting

  9. Lighting installation

As stressful as a time it may be, it’s worth every week and every penny once you’re sitting there hosting your first party and showing it off.

What is it with everyone wanting a kitchen renovation? Well, I’m the first to tell you, any kitchen is the heart of a home, so it makes sense that everyone wants to update their kitchen. It’s where you gather for dinner with family, where homework is completed, where drinks are poured and stories with friends happen. And in my home, it’s where a party ends up, whether you want it to or not.

Twelve weeks after you utter those ten-infamous words, you have the most amazing kitchen. You’ve gotten rid of those awful laminate counters, you’ve utilized that wasted space in the corner. You no longer have a peninsula that juts out in the middle of the floor and divides the space up. You’re sitting at your new island staring into a phenomenal new backsplash and sipping on your pour over coffee made with your insta hot water system you installed. All is well in the world.

What is the cost of a kitchen renovation?

More often than not, kitchen renovations start with 10 simple words and the unassuming belief that a kitchen renovation is an easy undertaking. “I want some new cabinets, counters and maybe re-configure the layout.” But what most clients don’t realize is that those 10 words can cost $35,000 before you know it.

I’m here to break down what you can expect when you utter those 10 words, and to explain how we come up with that kitchen renovation cost.

The hidden kitchen renovation costs

It’s obvious that the new counters will cost you, the new cabinets, and maybe the new appliances but what about the hidden kitchen renovation costs that you were not expecting?

When reconfiguring a space, a good interior designer thinks ahead about moving electrical, plumbing, what the floor looks like underneath that cabinet that you moved, and the fact that now the layout of your lights in the ceiling makes no sense.

Next thing you know, you’re watching all the upgrades take place, and you think “Gosh, it sure would be nice to have some under cabinet lighting and a few extra can lights in here”. Or “I think we want to add a garbage disposal and an insta hot system to the sink”. And “Man, the trim in the rest of the house looks dirty compared to the new trim in the kitchen.” Before long, those items that you never once thought about, have upped your budget. It never fails.

As an interior designer, it’s my job to give you all the information that you need and manage your budget as wisely as possible. Our design team recommends a 20% buffer to our clients for those “extras & unknowns.” Nothing could be worse than having $30k for a project and running out of money because of the unknowns then having to make shortcuts to get the job done.

Copper Dwelling + Design’s recently completed project on College Ave was a big undertaking. This historic home, built in the early 1900s, was split into a duplex for many years. Our clients decided to take back their home and restore it for their own family. The tree-lined streets of College Ave are stunning and compliment this brick bungalow so well!

When we presented the project to our clients, there was one main decision that they needed to make; would they move out completely or were they going to live through the renovations? They chose to live through the renovations, so the most important step was to shore up any structurally compromised aspects of this 100 year old home. Addressing fundamental building repairs was important as it allowed us to create a level floor. If you’ve ever owned a historic home, you know just how hard it can be to level floors.

Next, we tore down the walls exposing some amazing, and previously hidden, brick features inside the home. The primary goal of opening the home up was to create a clear line of sight through the home from the front entryway to the new back door.

The original kitchen was small and dark. By closing off the existing back hallway, we were able to create an incredible gourmet kitchen that is triple the size of the old kitchen. The tudor-style window in the kitchen is probably my top 3 favorite things in the home. This window choice was bold, but strategic, in that it lets in so much light into the space.

To create more functional spaces, we added on to the house by creating a new bedroom and full bathroom, and powder room. To accommodate this newly constructed addition, the back door was relocated to the center back of the house. To complete the new back-entryway, we installed a 1920’s inspired encaustic tile floor. We chose a stately black paneled french door which allows light to pour over the gorgeous floors and brighten the kitchen. This area became my number one favorite feature of the home.

In the living room, we framed in a custom fireplace over an existing insert to resemble the brick flue that was exposed during demo. Our clients wanted a farmhouse chic vibe and they picked out an incredible slab of walnut for their mantle. The fireplace married the historic character of the house and tied the look in the living room together to make it feel much larger.

The final phase was turning the home from a duplex into a single family unit. We tore down the stairwell wall that was originally only accessible from the outside through a separate entrance and created a side-foyer which gave the main part of the house access to the stairwell.

The construction phase of the home took about 10 months to complete. Our incredible clients somehow managed to stay sane while living through it all day in and day out, but we’re happy to report that all of the renovations were worth it!

7 Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Home Cleaner Longer

When cleaning your home, why not do it in such a way that’ll keep your home cleaner with less effort?

Here are 7 ways to keep your spring-clean fresh all year long:

#1 Use Humidity to Defy Dust

Low humidity levels cause static electricity. Not only does static attract dust, it makes it stick, so it’s difficult to remove. High humidity causes problems, too — it’s an ideal environment for dust mites. These microscopic critters are a double threat: They’re a common allergen, and they contribute to dust production. There are as many as 19,000 dust mites in half a teaspoon of house dust, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Yuck!

What to do: Keep your home’s humidity level between 40% and 50%. That’ll eliminate static while decreasing dust mite growth. 

Tip: About 80% of dirt in homes walks in from the outside. Stop dirt with a bristly doormat before it’s tracked inside.

#2 Apply a Car Product to Keep Shower Doors Scum-Free

You can eliminate soap scum build-up by coating your glass shower doors with a rain-repellent product made for car windshields. When applied to glass, products like these create an invisible barrier that causes water, oils, and debris (like soap suds) to bead and roll off.

What to do: Find this product anywhere that sells basic auto supplies. You’ll know it’s time to reapply when water stops beading on shower doors. Keep in mind, windshield rain repellents were made to treat glass, not plastic, so only use on glass door.

Another option: Automatic shower cleaners claim to let you clean your shower and tub less frequently — like every 30 days. After you finish bathing, the gadget will douse your shower and tub with a cleanser that prevents soap scum build-up while combating mold and mildew. You can buy automatic shower cleaners at most big-brand retailers, like Target and Walmart.

#3 Seal Your Stone Countertops

Natural stone countertops, including granite and marble, are porous, so if they’re not sealed, liquids like red wine, juice, or soy sauce can stain them. A countertop sealer repels stains by causing spills to bead instead of getting absorbed. Most countertops are sealed when installed, but the sealant does wear down.

What to do: To keep your countertops in tip-top shape, re-apply sealer twice a year. To see if you need a fresh coat, pour a tiny bit of water on your natural stone countertop. If the water doesn’t bead or doesn’t stay beaded for two to three minutes, it’s time to reseal.

Shopping for stone countertops? Slabs with lots of swirls or veins tend to be more porous, and, therefore harder to keep clean.

#4 Use Protectants on Furniture and Carpets

Protective furniture sprays and carpet sealants, like Scotchgard and Ultra-Guard, guard against inevitable spills by causing liquids to bead on the surface instead of being absorbed.

Some of these products also protect fabrics from fading and resist mold, mildew, and bacteria.

What to do: Apply the appropriate sealer once a year after a deep upholstery and carpet cleaning.

#5 Clean Your Oven the Old-Fashioned Way

Forget oven cleaners that promise an easy job. Most cleaners give off noxious fumes and make a horrible mess. The basic ingredient in many oven cleaners is lye, which can burn your eyes and your skin; it’s usually fatal if swallowed.

What to do: Use a wet pumice stone to scrape off dirt and grease. It’s faster than oven cleaner and toxin-free.

Tip: Need to wipe your range or anything else down? You can bust filth faster by heating up a clean, damp sponge or cloth in a microwave for 30 seconds before wiping with or without a cleaning product. Put on rubber gloves before you pick up that hot sponge.

#6 Do Quick Touch-Ups

Small cleaning projects prevent filth from building up. When you spot clean daily, you can prevent smudges from staining, banish dust bunnies, and even combat allergens.

What to do: Create a spot-cleaning kit so you can address small, dirty situations in minutes.

  • Cleaning pads are great for eradicating dirty fingerprints on walls and light switches. 

  • Damp micro-cloths can reduce airborne dander when used daily to wipe down pets.

  • Dry sweeper cloths can quickly pick up dust and dry dirt off floors, shelves, and electronics.

Tip: Keep stored items cleaner longer by shutting closets, cabinets, and drawers, so circulating dust and dirt can’t get in.

#7 Update Your Light Bulbs

Okay, It’s not really cleaning. But good lighting can make you and your home look and feel great — and help you spot that spill before it gets funky.

A room lit with low-wattage incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescents can look dark and dingy. “Daylight” bulbs brighten things up. These full-spectrum light bulbs mimic natural light, so they give better visual accuracy. Bonus: Like sunlight, these bulbs can boost your mood.

What to do: When shopping for bulbs, look for those marked “daylight” that have a range between 5,000 to 6,500 kelvins.

We’re excited to welcome Angelique Overton to the Copper Dwelling + Design—design team.

Angelique began her design journey in 2005, working in kitchen design and then lighting stores to sharpen her knowledge of construction, decore, and lighting. Angelique’s most recent work experience combined her work experience to design custom made cabnietry locally.

She has lived in Fort Mill, SC for two years and looks forward to establishing her family here for many years to come.
